Dinosaurs have long been a sore point in Australia: some fossils and sizeable footprints have been found, but nothing from large predators such as T. rex or Spinosaurus. Australian palaeobiologists are therefore now in high spirits: along the coast of Victoria, a ‘landmark discovery’ has been made of fossils belonging to large and powerful megaraptorids (6–8 metres long) and carcharodontosaurians (2–4 metres long), they report in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology of 20 February. The animals lived between 121 and 108 million years ago down under. The megaraptorids are the oldest known worldwide and considerably larger than related species in South America. MAGA dinosaurs!
