Editorial Internship

Every year, Bionieuws offers journalistic talent with a background in life sciences the opportunity to become acquainted with the complete production process of our magazine and website during an internship. Interns participate in the editorial team and write for both the monthly magazine and the online news section. In this way, they learn how journalism works in a hybrid newsroom that combines print and online.

Requirements

An editorial internship lasts at least three months. Eligible candidates are students pursuing a university or higher professional education degree in one of the life sciences who already have some experience with journalistic writing. This can be through courses or modules, or, for example, in a student association magazine or another medium.

Content of the Internship

Interns get to know all aspects of the journalistic profession; the entire editorial process up to printing takes place at the editorial office. This makes it possible to apply all science journalism skills. In addition, interns gain extensive insight into the editorial process, from planning to writing, editing, layout, and photo editing. Interns write articles for the newspaper and the website. The various journalistic genres serve as the starting point: interviews, news articles, reports, background stories, and finally, lighter features. All of this takes place under the regular, intense time pressure of an approaching deadline.

Research

There is also the possibility to set up and conduct (reader) research, for example, to adjust the editorial course based on the results. Through questionnaires and/or reader interviews, a representative portion of subscribers can easily be asked for their opinion (appreciation scores, reading behavior, wishes). Those interested in this can undertake such periodic research under the guidance of one of the editors and create a survey based on the editorial objectives and mission of Bionieuws . The results can lead to a recommendation for the editorial team.
