The team Evolved To Win, made up of life scientists from the University of Amsterdam, is the winner of Bionieuws’ Pub Life Scientists of the Year Award 2025 (the ‘Dutch Oscar of the life sciences’).

The team Evolved To Win from the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED-UvA) and the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS-UvA) is the winner of the Bionieuws’ Pub Life Scientists of the Year Award 2025. The team won the pub quiz on Wednesday evening, 27 May, at NWO Life in Egmond aan Zee. The quiz was hosted by Bionieuws editors Aafke Kok and Steijn van Schie.

A total of 10 teams took part in the quiz, which featured questions on general knowledge and animal sounds, as well as a practical test of the ability to rapidly extract results from a scientific publication. The team Evolved To Win scored 21 points and was followed at some distance by the teams De Tafel and The Loneliest Scientist (joint second) with 17.5 points, and Virus Waanzin (third) with 14.5 points.

The winners received a certificate, two colouring books, and complimentary drinks. The Bionieuws’ Pub Life Scientist(s) of the Year trophy is also known as the ‘Dutch Oscar of the life sciences’. This is the fifth time the pub quiz has been held at the annual NWO Life conference.
