Artificial intelligence provokes a great deal of debate. Some fear it will make people lazy; others see it as a valuable tool. In the LessonUp created by 4TU.Schools, pupils in years 8 and 9 discover how AI can contribute to biological research into seals. They learn to distinguish between grey seals and harbour seals, and investigate the threats these animals face. The assignments ask pupils to interpret graphs and make clear just how complex seal research can be in practice. AI turns out to be a surprisingly powerful ally: it helps researchers map large populations more quickly and contributes to seal conservation. In this way, pupils experience how biology and technology reinforce one another, and gain a realistic picture of modern wildlife research.
