Nature documentaries can transport you to an entirely different world. They often take place in exotic locations, but how remarkable is it to discover the nature right on your school’s doorstep? In this practical assignment called ‘Stadspark: The Movie’, from Veldwerk in de stad, pupils in year 10 or 11 become a real film crew, discovering everything about an ecosystem in the immediate surroundings of their school. Using a clear pupil guide, they work through every step of the design cycle. In the documentary, pupils must explain a number of concepts, such as (a)biotic factors, symbiosis and food webs. The final product is a three-minute mini-documentary which, incidentally, does not have to consist solely of nature footage – it may also include stop-motion or animation. Both the comprehensive pupil and teacher guides can be found at: veldwerkindestad.nl/opdrachten.
